Lance A. Durden

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lance Anthony Durden (born September 26, 1955 in Sale , United Kingdom ) is an American zoologist , parasitologist and university professor of British descent. He specializes in hematophagous arthropods of vertebrates such as ticks , animal lice and fleas and the zoonotic emerging infectious diseases they transmit . Durden was a curator of the United States National Tick Collection at Georgia Southern University from 1992 to 2003 and has since been a tenure-track professor in the Department of Biology at Georgia Southern University.

Life

Lance A. Durden comes from Manchester in northwest England , and studied at the Royal Holloway College of the University of London . There he graduated in 1977 with a B.Sc. in zoology . In 1981, again from the University of London, he received his Ph.D. His dissertation dealt with the ectoparasites of the striped chipmunk in Davidson County in the US state of Tennessee . In 1982 Durden became a citizen of the United States .

During the following decade, Durden conducted research at a number of institutions in the field of parasitology and biomedicine :

In 1992 Durden became a curator of the United States National Tick Collection at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro , Georgia , by far the largest collection of ticks in the world. He worked there until 2003 and then moved to a tenure-track position in the Department of Biology of the College of Science and Mathematics at Georgia Southern University.

Experts consider Durden to be one of the leading experts in biology, parasite-host relationships, faunistic relationships, biogeography , the ecology of the vectors and the systematics of parasites in vertebrates , especially mammals . The focus is on studies on hematophagous arthropods such as ticks , animal lice and fleas , as well as zoonotic emerging infectious diseases such as Lyme borreliosis , human granulocytic anaplasmosis and human monocytic Ehrlichiosis . In addition, he deals with zoogeography and tropical biology and conducts faunistic studies of the Lepidoptera with his colleagues .

By 2004, Durden had as an author, co-author or editor of four books, 13 book chapters and more than 150 articles in scientific journals with peer review published. One of the 34 species he had previously described was one bacterium , 13 each of animal lice and fleas , four ticks , two mites and one mammal, the summer shrew rat . There are also three genera of animal lice, fleas and the genus Sommeromys, the summer shrew rat.

With the first description of Campanulotes durdeni Price , Clayton & Adams , 2000, an Australian pine louse parasitizing on pigeons (Ocyphaps lophotes) , Durden was honored for his contributions to the systematics of animal lice and other ectoparasites.
