Haemodipsis brachylagi is a type of louse known as ectoparasite species specific in the North American pet rabbit ( Brachylagus idahoensis occurs) and from a dead female in 2007 only Nevada firstdescribed was.

features

Both male and female animals of the species have been described. The males have an average body length of 1.35 millimeters, the females are slightly larger with an average of 1.67 millimeters. The head, thorax and abdomen are slightly sclerotized. The head is slightly longer than it is wide and clearly rounded in front and behind. The antennae are five-segmented with a basal segment that is significantly longer than the following segments and only slightly longer than it is wide. The second antenna link is also longer than the other links.

The chest section (thorax) is about as long as it is wide. The breastplate is almost triangular in shape with rounded corners. The rear pairs of legs are stronger than the front ones. The hips ( coxes ) are almost triangular and all legs have strong claws at the end, which also become larger towards the rear. The abdomen is significantly wider than the chest area and typically has no tergites and sternites . In the females it is also broader than in the males. Further characteristics typical of the species relate to the position and formation of various bristles of the head, the chest area and the abdomen as well as the design of the chitin platelets and the genitals on the abdomen.

Way of life

The only known host of Haemodipsis brachylagi is the dwarf rabbit .

Haemodipsis brachylagi lives as a blood-sucking ectoparasite in the fur of the dwarf rabbit ( Brachylagus idahoensis ). The dwarf rabbit is closely associated with the sagebrush ( Artemisia tridentata ) and lives in the northwest of the USA in the area of the Great Basin and some adjacent regions. It extends from southwest of the state of Montana and western Wyoming to southwest Utah and central Washington , where the species occurs in an isolated population. It also stretches from central Nevada to northeastern California , eastern Oregon, and southern Idaho .

Since the lice are very closely tied to their hosts and the numbers of dwarf rabbits are declining in parts of their distribution area, a corresponding threat is assumed for Haemodipsis brachylagi .

Systematics

Haemodipsis brachylagi was assigned to the genus Haemodipsis , of which only two other species are described for North America. These are Haemodipsis setoni , which affects several species of the real rabbit and at least two species of cottontail rabbits , as well as Haemodipsis ventricosus, introduced with the wild rabbit ( Oryctolagus cuniculus ) . The closest related species was identified as Haemodipsis setoni , which shares an almost triangular breastplate as its main feature with Haemodipsis brachylagi and Haemodipsus conformalis , which lives on the Tolai hare ( Lepus tolai ) in Central Asia .

The species of the genus Haemodipsis are assigned to the family Polyplacidae within the real animal lice (Anoplura).

The naming of the species name brachylagi is derived from the host, the dwarf rabbit ( Brachylagus idahoensis ).
