Karl Heinrich von und zu Hornstein (born February 13, 1668 , † July 31, 1745 ) was a Knight of the Teutonic Order .

His parents were Johann Heinrich von Hornstein (* 1630) and Maria Ursula von Freyberg . Although this marriage resulted in 18 children, the line died out with the sons of this marriage. In 1681 Karl Heinrich became a noble boy with the High Master of the Teutonic Order, Ludwig Anton von Pfalz-Neuburg . After several years of military service, he was sworn into the Teutonic Order on May 15, 1689 in Ellingen . After another year of war he became a Trappier in Mergentheim in 1694. From 1697 to 1703 House Commander in Freudenthal , in 1703 he was Commander of Castle Horneck and on May 20, 1705 Commander of the Coming Oettingen and Donauwörth . Since 1708 councilor of the Ballei Franconia, he changed to Kapfenburg on May 12, 1712 as Komtur and in 1714 was also President of the Court Council of the Grand Master in Mergentheim . Raised governor of the Ballei Franken on March 28, 1717 , on May 15, 1718 he was appointed Landkomtur and thus at the same time Komtur von Ellingen and Würzburg. In the same year, renouncing the Kommende Kapfenburg, the Grand Master appointed him to the Privy Council on November 15, 1719. Grand Master and Archbishop Clemens August I of Bavaria also appointed him to the electoral secret council in Cologne in 1729.

Hornstein had the Hohenlohe building in the Kapfenburg demolished and rebuilt in the Baroque style with three floors. He is the builder of essential parts of Ellingen Castle (main and west wing), the St. Georg parish church in Ellingen , which was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War , the Maxkirche (also known as the Fish Church) and the Franciscan Church in Ellingen. Under him, the Ellingen hospital church and the Liebfrauenmünster of Wolframs-Eschenbach were baroque. In 1725 he had Absberg Castle built.

Karl Heinrich von Hornstein is buried in Ellingen in the crypt of the Maria-Hilf-Chapel behind the Catholic parish church, embalmed in a glass coffin at his behest by the order builder Franz Joseph Roth from Vienna in 1731. His facial features are clearly recognizable and match the existing oil paintings from the period.

coat of arms

The Hornstein coat of arms shows in the blue field twice a white stag pole bent over a yellow three-mountain (upgraded to a crown) and twice the Teutonic Cross. It can be found on the edge of the ceiling painting of the Ellingen parish church and on the ceiling of the Regensburg Teutonic Order Hall.
