history

Traces of settlement and a previous wooden church are dated as early as the 8th century. After a stone church from Ottonian times , which was destroyed by the Hungarian invasions , a successor building was built, which already had the dimensions of the present church. The current Liebfrauenmünster dates back to the 13th century: the lowest Romanesque tower storey comes from the church consecrated by Bishop Gundekar (1019-1075). Under the rule of the Teutonic Order , additional floors were built in 1220/30, the choir around 1250 and the nave followed around 1300 . In 1430/40 the tower received two Gothic storeys and in 1465/66 the pointed helmet with glazed bricks. The nave and choir were increased in 1453/54. In 1481 the sacristy was added on the north side.

The church was redesigned and refurbished in the baroque style in 1713–1719 by the Teutonic order builder Franz Keller , the painter Franz Ignaz Roth and his brother, the plasterer and later order builder Franz Joseph Roth . In 1749, today's Marienkapelle was built on the site of an extension with a library.

The redesign in the neo-Gothic style in 1876/78, with all baroque components being rigorously removed, made a big difference. All altars , benches, the pulpit and the communion bench were renewed in this style, the walls were painted with pictures from the life of Jesus and the windows were given neo-Gothic stained glass. The neo-Gothic style elements were removed during a renewed renovation in 1946. From 1985 to 1990, major damage to the roof structure was repaired during a thorough exterior renovation, the east gable was strengthened with backing and the weathered coffin and eaves cornices were renewed.

The church underwent the last major redesign in 2000/2001, when the gallery was demolished, the pulpit was finally removed and the sanctuary was redesigned. The organ now found its place in the north aisle , connected to a place for the choir. As a result of this measure, the central aisle was abandoned and replaced by a closed bench block.

Altars and Figures

Wolframs-Eschenbach Liebfrauenmünster Cross finding altar middle section

In the south aisle, the altar to find the cross (around 1490) shows Empress Helena with her court and Bishop Makarios of Jerusalem with an adviser and two workers finding the Holy Cross. On the side wings the Roman martyrs John and Paul are depicted, on the back of the altar wings the saints Gangolf and Martin , the latter in the clothes of wealthy Nuremberg patricians . The 14 helpers in need can be seen in the predella .

A late Gothic Pietà from 1480 stands on the high altar, flanked by figures of St. Elisabeth and St. George from 1745.

Wolframs-Eschenbach Liebfrauenmünster rosary altar center

In the north aisle there is a rosary altar, also known as the “heavenly court”, from the school of Veit Stoss . It is a representation of the holy heaven framed by a rosary . Groups of saints from the Old Testament, the apostles , martyrs , the ecclesiastical hierarchy, i.e. popes and bishops, theology, virgins and holy mothers are arranged around an oversized cross .

A commemorative plaque from 1922 for the poet Wolfram von Eschenbach , whose grave is in the church, but can no longer be clearly located, is on the south wall of the church.

One of the treasures of the church is a group of wooden figures, the birth of Christ, around 1500, which is only in front of the altar on the Christmas holidays.

In the side chapel there is a portrait of the Seven Sorrows of Mary , a copy of the miraculous image from Oberelchingen near Ulm . The altarpiece depicts the Assumption of Mary into heaven. It was the former high altarpiece and refers to the patronage of the Liebfrauenmünster. The figure of Sebastian with a historic votive candle (1700/1730) originally comes from the St. Sebastian cemetery church, which is west of the city.

Bells

The oldest majuscule bell from the 14th century (tone g) bears the inscription JOHANNES + MATTHAEUS + LUKAS + MARKUS + MARIA between the cord webs. After the Second World War it was cast and changed in tone. The large bell (tone e), cast by Georg Herolt in 1629, bears the inscription: + IESV + CHRISTE + FILI + DEI + VIVI + MISERERE + NOBIS + GEORG: HEROLT IN NVRMBERG 1629. In 1975 the ringing was followed by two new bells (g´ , h´, d´´) of the Heidelberg bell foundry completed.
