Guido Martini

Guido Martini (born July 27, 1881 in Piano di Vallarsa (near Rovereto ), † September 26, 1964 in Regensburg ) was a German sculptor .

Life

Martini was born as the son of civil engineer Baltassare Martini and his wife Maria Martini, nee. Stoffella born. He grew up with his siblings Enrico, Gisela, Aldina and Lucia in Piano di Vallarsa. From 1887 to 1895 he attended elementary school in the Parocchia di Vallarsa. In 1895 the family moved to Bregenz for professional reasons . There he attended elementary school in Höchst from January to August 1897 .

From November 1, 1897, he learned the craft of sculpting from the sculptor and architect Fidelis Rudhart in Altenstadt . He turned down an invitation to work with Hubert Netzer in order to devote himself to religious art with Thomas Buscher . In 1902 he went to Cologne to work for the sculptors Josef Moest and Georg Grasegger . After attending the vocational school in Munich from 1902 to 1903 , he started his own business . He then worked for the sculptor Richard Moest in Cologne and again for Fidelis Rudhart in Altenstadt.

In May 1907 Guido Martini moved to Regensburg at Sternbergstrasse 28 and worked for the sculptor Georg Schreiner, whom he had already met during his time in Munich. Guido Martini later took over the management of the studio. On November 24, 1909, he married Barbara Schiffer, whom he had met in Regensburg. The marriage had four children: Guido Wilhelm (1914), Regina Rina (1917), Alfred Heinrich (1922), Rita Franziska (1930).

In 1927 he made the acquaintance of the painter Georg Winkler, who was responsible for the interior decoration of the new church of St. Anton , and thus worked for the figurative decoration of his home church. Winkler had a lasting influence on Martini. He turned to a more modern style.

After his son Guido Martini jun. to Rome , he made further trips to Rome for study purposes in 1941 and 1942.

Martini joined the professional association of fine artists in Regensburg on July 15, 1946 .

On August 17, 1963 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Guido Martini died on September 26, 1964 at the age of 83. He was buried on September 29th at the Lower Catholic Cemetery in Regensburg.

Works (selection)

Guido Martini was considered to be very hardworking all his life. From morning to evening he worked in his studio at Richard-Wagner-Straße 16. It is therefore difficult to comprehend his complete oeuvre in full. Urban Blank and Max Reiger were also among his students.

Like his father, Baltassare Martini, Guido Martini was a staunch beard . He required his students to wear a beard. Some of his students, such as Max Reiger, wore a beard from then on.
