St. Anthony Church

The Sankt-Antonius-Kirche is a Catholic church in the Friedrichshain part of Berlin's Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district . It is located on Rüdersdorfer Straße and is a listed building . The parish of St. Antonius merged in 2003 with the parish of St. Pius to form the parish of St. Antonius, whose parish church is St. Pius.

history

The building in which today's Sankt-Antonius-Kirche is located was built in 1897/98 as a Leo Hospice , named after Pope Leo XIII. , built according to designs by Hermann Bunning . It is a brick building to which a small choir with a roof tower is attached to the side . The hospice, created on behalf of the Friedrichshain workers' associations, was supposed to make it easier for Catholic immigrants from the eastern states to feel at home in their new home, Berlin, which to this day is mainly evangelical.

The building's choir served as a chapel and could be enlarged to include a large multi-purpose hall in the hospice building by means of a folding wall . The chapel was named after the Franciscan and Saint Anthony of Padua . The newly created St. Antonius community became the owner of the building. In 1909, the hospice was given up and the multi-purpose hall was converted into a church, with an altar on the narrow north side. In the 1920s, Wilhelm Fahlbusch and Heinrich Schelhasse rebuilt the church. The church was damaged by bombs in 1944, but it was consecrated again in 1952.

In 1970, an 11-storey, elongated residential building was built on Rüdersdorfer Strasse, for which the front building in front of the church was also removed. As a result, the church could no longer be reached directly. Since then it is no longer visible from Rüdersdorfer Straße behind the residential complex. The church service hall was extended to replace the lost rooms, and at the same time the church was rebuilt. Since then, the altar has been on the east wall, which has no windows, and Alfons Bittner designed twelve colored windows.
