Feldkirch Cathedral Parish Church
The Roman Catholic Dompfarrkirche Feldkirch (often referred to as St. Nikolaus Cathedral ) is located in the old town of the Feldkirch municipality in the Feldkirch district in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to Saint Nicholas and belongs to the Feldkirch dean's office in the Feldkirch diocese . The building is a listed building . When the diocese of Feldkirch was founded, the parish church became the cathedral on August 12, 1968 .
Location description
The church is located on (today's) Schlossgraben street. It was built in the north-east of the city behind the city wall , along the former moat, due to the limited space, with only two aisles in the Romanesque style.
history
It is believed that it was formerly either a branch church of St. Peter in Rankweil or of St. Petronilla in Altenstadt . In 1218 it became a parish church. The right of patronage went to the cathedral chapter in Chur in 1286 . In 1287, according to a document, the church was consecrated to St. Nicholas .
The original church was badly damaged in the town fires in 1348, 1396 and 1460. In 1478 it was rebuilt and consecrated under the architect Hans Sturn with a late Gothic nave and saddle roof , and in 1479 the church tower in the north was completed. Today's choir was built around 1520 under a lower gable roof. There are also sacristies and under pent roofs both a Mary and a baptistery.
Furnishing
The wrought-iron pulpit was from a previous 1,520 tabernacle shaped. The right side altar , depicting Anna herself third , was created in 1521 by the Feldkirch painter Wolf Huber , who also wrote the Lamentation of Christ in the choir . The high altar was created in 1875 by Josef Götz, the left side altar in 1878 by Josef Bertsch according to a plan by Dom Vicar Georg Dengler. The reliefs of the Stations of the Cross created Emil Gehrer in 1963 and 1964. Three marble slabs in front of the Lady altar in the aisle close the episcopal tomb , including the grave of Bishop Bruno Wech agent .
The neo-Gothic altar of the Marienkapelle from 1905 comes from Fidelis Rudhart . A Madonna statue from stone molding , Mary with (the) child , was built around 1430. Hans Thomann created in 1515 originating from the former Apostle Altar figures Peter and Paul . The glass paintings are by Martin Häusle from 1960 to 1961.
There is a Pietà from 1956 and a relief created by Emil Gehrer .
According to a plan by Clemens Holzmeister , a high triangular porch was attached to the church in 1924 as a war memorial with plaques.
Organs
The main organ was built in 1976 by the organ building company Metzler and Sons ( Dietikon / CH). The slider chests -instrument has 35 registers on three manuals and pedal . The playing and register actions are mechanical.
