The Ducal Castle of Châtillon-sur-Seine was the castle of the Dukes of Burgundy . It is located in the French city of Châtillon-sur-Seine in the department of Côte-d'Or ( Burgundy-Franche-Comté ) and is since 1909 as a monument historique under monument protection .

description

Only the towers of the donjon and the remains of the walls remain of the castle . The upper part of the former watchtower is badly damaged and of the Sainte-Anne tower only the ground floor, covered with a hipped stone roof, remains . To the north, where the bishop's residence was, there is another tower, the Tour de Gissey , which allowed a view of the entire city. Since the 19th century at the latest, there has been a cemetery in the middle of the castle ruins, on which there are burial chapels and the grave of Marshal Marmont .

history

The castle, which was probably built by the Dukes of Burgundy in the 12th century, took up part of the castrum that until 973 had been the sole property of the Bishops of Langres . The duke's castle and the bishop's residence were enclosed by a common curtain wall, of which only a few parts and the Gissey tower in the north have been preserved. In 1359 the castle was badly damaged by the English and subsequently partially rebuilt. After the Huguenot Wars it was demolished by the residents, and King Henry IV gave them the necessary permission on January 30, 1598. In 1608 the ground floor of the Saint Anne tower was used as a guard house, later - probably in the 19th century - a bread oven was installed there.
