Hu Hesheng (born June 20, 1928 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese mathematician who deals with differential geometry and mathematical physics .

Hu Hesheng studied at Da Xia University (graduated in 1950) and Zhejiang University, where she received her doctorate in 1952 and then spent four years doing research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Since 1956 she taught at Fudan University , where she led a research group in differential geometry as a professor in the 1980s and 1990s.

Among other things, she dealt with the theory of deformations of hypersurfaces and with spaces of constant curvature as well as with harmonic images of Riemannian manifolds. Later she dealt with mathematical physics, for example the solutions of the Yang-Mills equation (classification of spherically symmetrical gauge potentials, existence of static solutions, monopole solutions), integrable systems such as the Toda lattice , connections of integrable systems with the differential geometry of surfaces and with geometric theory of solitons .

After Stanley Deser had already proven the non-existence of static solutions (which disappear quickly enough at infinity) of the source-free pure Yang-Mills equations in Minkowski space, Hu Hesheng proved this for curved spacetime, i.e. the outer space of the Schwarzschild solution.

In 2002 she was a Noether Lecturer (and ICM Emmy Noether Lecture ) and gave the lecture on this at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Beijing . She was Vice President of the Chinese Mathematical Society, President of the Shanghai Mathematical Society, has been a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences since 1991 and of the Third World Academy of Sciences since 2003 .

Her husband Chaohao Gu (* 1926) is also a mathematics professor and a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received his doctorate in physics in Moscow in 1959, was Vice President of Fudan University and from 1988 to 1993 President of the Chinese University of Science and Technology (USTC).
