The Hess Mountains are a group of up to 1,500  m high mountains on the Black Coast of Palmerland on the Antarctic Peninsula . They tower west of Dietz Bluff at the head end of Hilton Inlet and border on the Gruening Glacier to the north, the Runcorn Glacier to the west and the Beaumont Glacier to the south .

The first aerial photographs were taken in 1940 during the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941). The United States Geological Survey mapped them using aerial photographs taken by the United States Navy from 1966 to 1969. The British Antarctic Survey carried out surveys between 1972 and 1973. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named them in 1978 after the US geologist Harry Hammond Hess (1906-1969), who worked at Princeton University from 1948 to 1969 .
