The Hessen-Homburg-Kaserne is a former barracks in the Lamboy district of the city of Hanau .

history

In 1907 the Kingdom of Prussia was looking for a location for the III. Railway regiment. The city of Hanau offered to build the barracks and the entire infrastructure at its own expense. The high costs - the barracks itself cost 2.8 million marks - should be amortized by an economic revitalization of the city. In 1908, construction work began on the barracks, which was built opposite the existing Ulanen barracks on its former parade ground, and was completed in 1910. The headquarters building was at the main entrance, the accommodations for the battalions and the administration buildings were lined up around the inner courtyard.

The III. The railway regiment was stationed in the Hessen-Homburg barracks until the end of the First World War , after which the regiment was disbanded and the barracks stood empty. The Wehrmacht did not move into the barracks until 1937 and stationed the 2nd Battalion of Infantry Regiment No. 88 there. During the Second World War , the Hessen-Homburg barracks were badly damaged in 1945. After the end of the war, the US occupation forces used the site as a warehouse for displaced persons . Then the US Army rebuilt the barracks and used them.

conversion

In 1991 the US Army cleared the Hessen-Homburg barracks. The facility then served briefly as a refugee camp for refugees from the war in Yugoslavia . In 2001 the city of Hanau decided to build a school on the site of the former barracks in order to upgrade the district. Extensive redevelopment measures were also carried out, with a parking lot on the east side of the parade ground and a school yard on the west side. The Hessen-Homburg school center finally opened there in 2004 .

The other buildings are partly used by authorities, such as the Technical Town Hall of the City of Hanau and the Hanau State Education Authority, and some private companies have also moved there.

Monument protection

The Hessen-Homburg-Kaserne is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
