Thealozzi, cultural center of the Bochum Heusnerviertel

The Heusnerviertel is a residential area in the Ruhr area . It became famous when 150 apartments in 40 houses were occupied here in the 1980s .

In the 1970s, the city of Bochum left numerous houses in the Heusnerviertel, which were on the planned route of the Bochumer Ring , to students for temporary use. This was intended to alleviate the lack of student housing that prevailed at the time. When the houses were to be demolished in the 1980s because of the further construction of the bypass road , one of the largest squats in Germany took place here. After re-planning, the majority of the houses were demolished. The former school , which has served as a cultural center since the occupation , was retained. Almost none of the former squatters still live in the vicinity of the district. The Thealozzi cultural center, established in 1982, is still in use today.
