  • Witch Hillary, a little witch
  • Maria Bellacanta, an opera singer

The witch Hillary goes to the opera is a play for children by Peter Lund and was premiered on March 19, 1997 at the Neukölln Opera .

action

The play is about a little witch Hillary who lives alone with her mouse Wühly and has won free tickets for the opera on the radio. Since she doesn't know what "opera" means, she looks up the dictionary, where she learns that opera means "where people just sing". She interprets this supposed compulsion to sing as an interesting and funny song curse that she would like to be able to use as a witch. So she conjures up the famous witch and singer Maria Bellacanta, who then introduces her to the world of opera by singing a few arias and taking Hillary's fear of opera as an art form.

To the piece

The play with its excerpts from the Magic Flute and other operas - such as Hillary - is intended to introduce children to the opera genre. The curious, all-questioning Hillary serves as a figure of identification for children in the play, while Bellacanta takes on the role of the apparently better-knowing adults. Usually the actresses are accompanied by a pianist. Lund wrote the piece, which was easily written by hand, rather as a text basis for a wide variety of staging options. It can be cast with an actress for Hillary, a singer for Bellacanta and a puppeteer for Wühly or it can come out as a one-person piece , such as B. happened in the 2000/01 season at the Halle Opera House.

effect

Due to the small cast, the low technical effort and the rare cross-disciplinary mixed form (dialogues and singing), the piece has meanwhile been played at almost all German opera and multi-discipline houses and usually stays in the program for a long time. In Austria, Hexe Hillary goes to the opera was played in an extended version by Kay Link at the Landestheater Linz from the 2002 season , in which other musical numbers were added, the character of Wühly ran through the whole piece, including the complex "Hosenrolle" Examples from The Marriage of Figaro and Hansel and Gretel were explained and the children were encouraged to sing along.

premiere

The witch Hillary goes to the opera was premiered on March 19, 1997 with Ilka Sehnert as Maria Bellacanta and Ralf Lücke as the witch Hillary at the Neukölln Opera.
