history

The Landestheater Niederbayern was founded in 1952 under the name "Zweckverband Niederbayerisches Städtebundtheater". Shortly after the end of the Second World War, the theaters in Landshut, Passau and Straubing began operating independently of one another. However, as a result of the currency reform , financial difficulties led to the closure of the three houses in 1950. In February 1952 work was resumed within the framework of the Niederbayerisches Städtebundtheater - at that time still a loose association. The first program included five spoken theaters , six operas and two operettas . Since the theater did not have its own ensemble in the first year , the first productions were exclusively occupied with guests. The current functional division was already established in the founding year, according to which the acting department is based in Landshut and the music department is based in Passau.

On October 5, 1952, the "Zweckverband Niederbayerisches Städtebundtheater" was constituted, the first director was Erik Wildhagen. Since locations in the Upper Bavaria district were also used, the public corporation renamed itself "Südostbayerisches Städtetheater" in 1953, the name that the theater was to bear for the next 55 years. In 1964 the district of Lower Bavaria joined the association. For financial reasons, the Zweckverband was to be dissolved in 1968/69 at the suggestion of the Bavarian Supreme Audit Office, but this was rejected by the members. Because the number of non-Lower Bavarian venues has steadily decreased over the years, the Zweckverband decided in 2008 to rename it to “Landestheater Niederbayern”. The theater currently employs around 150 people, including 14 singers, 19 actors and 42 orchestral musicians. The two departments in Landshut and Passau each have their own independent workshops, tailoring, technical and administrative teams.

program

EnstTheater Landshut

The Landestheater Niederbayern receives national attention because of its often very ambitious repertoire - it regularly contains works that can rightly be described as absolute rarities: Francesca da Rimini by Riccardo Zandonai , Adriana Lecouvreur by Francesco Cilea , La rondine by Giacomo Puccini or Orlando furioso by Antonio Vivaldi .

The Niederbayern Castle Festival has been an integral part of the Niederbayern State Theater's program since summer 2009 - for the open-air festival the theater leaves its usual venues and plays in the Prantlgarten in front of the Sculpture Museum in Landshut, the Oberhaus Fortress in Passau and the Duke's Castle in Straubing. The 2018/2019 program includes a total of 18 new productions: six new opera and singspiel productions, one musical production, five drama productions as well as three studio and three children's and youth theater productions. In cooperation with the theater in Budweis, the production Endstation Sehnsucht, a narrative ballet by Libor Vacul i k based on Tennessee Williams, will be created in the 2018/19 season . In addition, the Niederbayerische Philharmonie - the orchestra of the Landestheater Niederbayern - plays six symphony concerts, a carnival gala, a New Year's gala and a total of five chamber concerts.
