Master with the Cube: Apollo and Marsyas (copper engraving), Italy, 16th century

A copper engraver from Italy , who drew the works ascribed to him with a small cube and the letter B (V) on it, is called a master with the cube ( French: Maître au Dé ; Italian : Maestro del dado ) . The master, not known by name, was probably active in Rome in the first half of the 16th century.

Work and style

The master with the cube joins the working method of the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi (* 1480; † 1534) and stabbed mainly after pictures by Raphael and also z. B. after Giulio Romano or Baldassare Peruzzi . The master's engravings and their distribution show the high productivity in Raimondi's workshop, the quality of their output and great craftsmanship in the distribution of pictures of Raphael's work. More than 85 tricks of the master with the die are listed.

Attempts at identification

Originally sought to be identified as Nicolas Beatrizet (* 1515; † 1565) or Benedetto Verino (* 1512; † 1570), the master with the cube is now usually considered to be probably identical to Tommaso Vincidor (* 1493; † 1536), an assistant to Raphael seen. However, all attempts at identification are controversial.
