Nicolas Beatrizet (* 1515 in Thionville , † 1565 in Rome ) was a copperplate engraver of French origin who worked in northern Italy during the Renaissance . He may have come from a family of goldsmiths from Nancy in Lorraine , but settled in Rome, where he worked from around 1540 until his death.
plant
The work of Nicolas Beatrizet includes more than 100 received stitches . There are engravings with religious motifs, e.g. B. after pictures by Raphael or Michelangelo as well as profane motifs from mythology, allegory and architecture of antiquity , such. B. a battle of the Amazons or images of the panorama of ancient Rome. A few portraits are also known. Beatrizet published his work through workshops and editors in Rome during his lifetime . B. first with Tommaso Barlacchi , possibly later also self-published.
Beatrizet may also have anatomical images, such as B. in 1556 made a few engravings to illustrate the medical treatise of Juan Valverde de Amusco . This assumption is based on initials found on such engravings.
Work style
Nicolas Beatrizet's working method and choice of motifs is close to that of Marcantonio Raimondi (* 1480, † 1534), whose style he adopted from templates. However, according to some experts in art history, he could not necessarily imitate the high artistic skill and quality of his role model.
Master with the dice?
The attribution of works by an anonymous engraver, the so-called master with the dice, to Nicolas Beatrizet has not prevailed due to technical contradictions.
