Hibiscadelphus bombycinus is an extinct tree art from the genus Hibiscadelphus .
description
Hibiscadelphus bombycinus was a small, apparently deciduous tree of undocumented height. This species was similar to Hibiscadelphus hualalaiensis . However, the kidney-shaped leaves were smaller and the bracts wider. The broad, oblong obovate leaf blade was 3 to 8.5 cm long. The upper side of the leaf was sparsely hairy. The underside was densely hairy, especially in the nerve axils. The leaf shape was three-angled, five-angled or lobed. The leaf margin was notched irregularly. The leaf base was deeply heart-shaped with a closed leaf incision.
The leaf stalks were 1 to 5 cm long, the flower stalks 2 cm and the fruit stalks 4 cm long. The six 9 to 10 mm long and 1 to 5.3 mm wide bracts were linear-oblong to spatulate and somewhat fused at the base. The approximately 1.2 cm long calyx was tubular to bell-shaped. The approximately 3.3 cm long corolla was moderately arched. The woody capsule fruit , 2.5 to 3 cm long, was somewhat obovate and pointed. The mesocarp was pronounced and reticulate. There were ten endocarp layers . The yellowish, woolly coated seeds were 6 mm long.
die out
Hibiscadelphus bombycinus was collected only once between 1851 and 1868 by Wilhelm Hillebrand on the dry slopes of Kohala near Kawaihae , Hawaii . In 1920 the species was described on the basis of an incorrectly labeled specimen in the Bernice P. Bishop Museum by Charles Noyes Forbes . The destruction of the vegetation by overgrazing and bush fires is suspected to be the cause of extinction.
