Hick Hack in Gackelwack is a card-based children and family game by the German game designer Stefan Dorra , which was published by Zoch Verlag in 2001 and then internationally. In the game, the players try to get as much food as possible on different poultry farms with the help of poultry and fox cards and thus win the game.

The game is based on the 1992 bluff game Razzia by Stefan Dorra, which was included in the selection list for Game of the Year .

Theme and equipment

In the game, players have to place cards on their cards in such a way that they get as many grains as possible with the help of their poultry cards and as much poultry as possible from the opponent with the help of their fox cards, and thus earn points in the form of food for the final settlement.

In addition to instructions, the game material consists of:

  • 6 poultry yards in six game colors,
  • 42 poultry cards in the six game colors with different values,
  • 18 fox cards in the six game colors with different values,
  • 78 grains in three colors for different values, and
  • a six-sided die.

Style of play

At the beginning of the game, the six poultry yards are laid out in the middle of the table. The poultry and fox cards are shuffled and each player receives five of these cards as hand cards, the rest is placed as a face-down draw pile in the middle of the table. The 78 grains are mixed up in the game box (or in a bag) and at the beginning of each round a player places a randomly drawn grain on each poultry yard.

All players choose one card from their hand, two to three players each, and place them face down in front of them. All cards are assigned to one of the six poultry farms using the card color. When all cards are in place, they are turned over and settled in the order of the poultry farms. Several constellations can arise:

  • if a poultry is alone in a yard, it gets all the grains there.
  • If several poultry are together on one farm, they can agree on the distribution of the grains or have to fight over the total amount ("duel").
  • if a fox lies alone in a poultry yard, he gets nothing.
  • If a fox is on the same farm with one or more poultry, he gets all opposing poultry cards and their owners get nothing.
  • if several foxes are on the same farm with one or more poultry, they quarrel over the poultry.
  • if a player places a -2 card (“poultry ready to flee”) to a farm where he is alone, he gets all the grains. If this card is on a farm with other poultry or foxes, it flees and takes a green grain of feed with it.

In both cases mentioned, “dueling” is done with the dice. All players involved in the duel roll the dice and add the number of points to the value of the card played. The winner gets all of the food (grains or poultry) that was played for. After all cards have been settled, all cards still on display are put on the discard pile and each player receives the food he has won, which he puts aside. Then each player draws one card (if there are two or three players, two) and one grain is placed in each yard at the beginning of the new round.

The game ends after the round in which the last available grains have been distributed on the farms. Then the players settle the food they have won, whereby green grains score one, blue grain two and yellow grain three points and the captured poultry score the card value as points. The player with the most points wins.

History and reception

The game Hick Hack in Gackelwack was developed by Stefan Dorra based on his game Razzia from 1992 and was published for the international game days 2001 by Zoch Verlag in the Zicke, Zacke series. Like all Zicke, Zacke , the game was designed by the illustrator Doris Matthäus . In the same year, an English version of the game was released as a Pick Picnic for the American market in collaboration with Gigamic and Rio Grande Games. In 2008 the Dutch publisher 999 Games published the game in Dutch as Graantje de voorste and in 2010 an Italian version was published by Stupor Mundi and Venice Connection under the name Hick Hack nel Pollaio .
