Goethe is wrong here!

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Goethe is wrong here! is a play with music by the student cabaret Die Nachrichtener zum Goethe-Jahr 1932. It paved the way for its authors into professional cabaret. The premiere on January 31, 1932 took place in the Munich student house.

The text of the three-act operetta parody was written jointly by Helmut Käutner , Bobby Todd and Kurd E. Heyne . The music came from Bobby Todd and Kurd E. Heyne.

Emergence

The piece was created as a carnival piece by the University of Munich , which was traditionally written and played by students. The choice of topic was founded in the Goethe year 1932 (100th anniversary of the poet's death). Heyne later reports that in 1932 there was a Goethe “merchandising” that bordered on the absurd.

The title goes back to a common saying : “ Goethe is wrong here ”.

First performance staff

Helmut Käutner painted the set for the staging of the premiere, and Bobby Todd directed it. In addition to the news, the mimes Ernst Kammerer , Ilse Gotthelf , Gundel Thormann and Willy Duvoisin took part in the performance, all of whom later became relevant figures in contemporary history.

Performance history

After the premiere at the Studentenhaus, Otto Falckenberg took the piece to the Münchner Kammerspiele , where it was played for several nights in front of a sold-out house. Further performances followed at the Volkstheater. After a call to Berlin by Ernst Josef Aufricht at the Renaissance Theater and an enthusiastic review by Alfred Kerr , numerous other sold-out performances took place there and finally throughout Germany. A total of around 350 performances are spoken of.

Reviews

Viktor Wittner from The Cross Section saw a “renewal of cabaret from the spirit of the seminar”. Alfred Kerr finished his review of the Berlin premiere on April 8, 1932: “You roar! Here the joke becomes an outlet for the Goethe celebration, at the same time fun for the operetta and ultimately for the entire theater. You shall be blessed! "

Others

Although Goethe errs here! the group received an exclusive contract with a record company, in contrast to all subsequent news programs, there seem to be no sound recordings of the piece.
