Hierarchical administrative subdivision codes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hierarchical administrative subdivision codes ( HASC ) is a coding list for subnational administrative units. It adds a third level to ISO 3166 .

The HASC are described in the book Administrative Subdivisions of Countries: A Comprehensive World Reference, 1900 Through 1998 , by Gwillim Law († August 31, 2016).

The code consists of letters and has a constant length of 8 characters (two points for separation). The country is coded according to ISO 3166-1 (2 letters), the first national administrative unit according to ISO 3166-2 (2 letters) and then the subordinate administrative units follow as the third level (e.g. districts and urban districts in Germany). Very often the 1st and 3rd letters are used as coding for the third administrative level (e.g. "BE" for Bielefeld).
