Hieronymus vom Stein (also: Petraeus ; * 1550 in Königsberg (Prussia) ; † July 25, 1595 ibid) was a German legal scholar.

Life

Hieronymus came from an old Franconian noble family who had come to Königsberg via Bohemia and had gained influence there. His uncle Paul vom Stein was there professor of medicine, another uncle Bonaventura vom Stein was a mathematician and court preacher. Hieronymus' father of the same name had become mayor of the Löbenicht community. His mother Ursula was the daughter of Kaspar Platner, a citizen of Löbenicht.

On April 20, 1566, Hieronymus began studying at the University of Königsberg , which initially gave him the tools to attend higher faculties by studying the basic philosophical sciences. On December 22, 1569, he acquired the degree of Bachelor of Philosophy . Since the University of Königsberg at that time did not have the right to award doctorates in the higher faculties, he continued studying at the University of Rostock from March 1575 , where he gave private lectures through the institutions . In 1579 he came to the University of Basel , where he received his doctorate in law on February 2, 1580 with the dissertation Praelectio non publica .

Then he took over the extraordinary professorship of law at the university of his hometown on August 20, 1580, for which he initially received a low salary of 75 marks. In 1588 he became second full professor , which was linked to a salary increase. However, he was not granted long-term effectiveness. After he appeared with the testamento paganico disputation and became rector of the Königsberg University in the summer semester of 1590 , he died at the age of 45.

Vom Stein had married Barbara († December 31, 1627), a daughter of the court relative Johann Ungermann, in November 1583. Six children are known from this marriage.
