Higashiyama Chieko ( Japanese 東山 千 栄 子 , pre-war spelling : 東山 千 榮 子 real name: Kano Sen ( 河野 せ ん ), born Watanabe ( 渡 辺 せ ん ); born September 30, 1890 in Chiba , Chiba Prefecture ; † May 8, 1980 in Gotemba , Shizu Prefecture ) was a Japanese actress .

Higashiyama was born as the second daughter into the large family of the politician and judge Tōru Watanabe , who was also a member of the Japanese House of Lords . Her younger sister Yuri Nakae is a well-known gastrosophine , her brother Ryō Watanabe is a well-known bass player. In 1899 she was adopted by a maternal uncle, the lawyer Tōru Terao , and moved to the Kōjimachi district (today: Chiyoda ) in Tokyo.

After attending primary school for two years, Higashiyama switched to the elite school Gakushūin ( 学習 院 女子 中 ・ 高等 科 ), an integrated middle and high school for noble girls. In 1909 she married the businessman Tōkurō Kano ( 河野 通 久 郎 ), who ran a branch for liquor imports in Moscow and with whom she lived in Moscow for eight years . Due to the turmoil of the October Revolution in 1917, she returned to Japan with her husband. She made her debut as an actress in 1925 at the Shingeki Theater Tsukiji Shōgekijō ( 築 地 小 劇場 ) in Eugene O'Neill's "Emperor Jonas".

She later worked with the theater troupes of Tsukiji-za and Bungaku-za , and in 1944 she was one of the founding members of the Hayū-za acting company alongside Koreya Senda , Eijirō Tōno and Eitaro Ozawa . After the war she played roles such as Countess Almaviva in Beaumarchai's play The Great Day or Figaro's Wedding or the role of Lysistrata in the comedy of the same name by Aristophanes. She became known with the theatrical role of the landlady Ranjewskaja in Chekhov's play The Cherry Orchard ( 桜 の 園sakura no sono ).

In addition to her theater work, she also played in more than 60 film productions between 1936 and 1971, including films by Akira Kurosawa and Ozu Yasujirō . She achieved worldwide fame through the lead role of the old wife in Ozu's masterpiece The Journey to Tokyo , which is regularly counted among the best films of all time. In 1965 she was awarded the Order of the Noble Crown for her achievements and the following year the Japanese Ministry of Education awarded her as a person with special cultural merits . In 1977 Higashiyama's autobiography was published under the title Watashi no ayunda jinsei ( 私 の 歩 ん だ 人生 , about "My way of life").

1958 Higashiyame chairman of the actors organization Nihon shingeki hayū kyōkai ( 日本 新劇 俳 優 協会 ). Chieko Higashiyama died in 1980 at her home in Gotemba at the age of 89.
