High endothelial venules

Postcapillary venules in a lymph node: (1) macrophage , (2) lymphocytes , (3) postcapillary venules with cubic epithelium, (4) lymph vessel and lymph capillary

The term high endothelial venules ( HEV ) or postcapillary ( epithelioid ) venules , often also high endothelial venule , denotes a small venous blood vessel that can be found in lymphatic organs ( lymph nodes , Peyer's plates , tonsils ) directly next to the lymph follicles .

function

The venole allows the lymphocytes to pass ( leukodiapedesis ) from the blood to the surrounding areas. In contrast to other venules, the inner wall ( endothelium ) of an HEV is not lined with flat but with cubic (isoprismatic) cells , which therefore also have round, instead of flattened, cell nuclei .
