Highway is an international event film by Oscar winner and director Xavier Koller from 2002. The event film with a fictional plot, shot in 70 mm film format, was designed exclusively for showing in motion simulator cinemas. The film premiered in 2002 in the Autostadt theme park near Wolfsburg.

At the beginning of the film, the plot of the film pokes at itself: After the audience has taken their seats in the projection booth, the film seems to be unable to start due to technical problems. On the screen (which in motion simulator cinemas can be compared with the view from the windshield of a truck), from the viewer's point of view in front of the demonstration booth, a somewhat dumbass young mechanic ( Hardy Krüger Jr. ) appears. Because he kicks his foot against the screen, the cinema booth itself comes to life. She attacks the mechanic and pursues him with a wild chase through house walls and the theme park, which the audience experienced for themselves a few minutes ago when they arrived at the cinema. Even jumping into the water cannot save the mechanic, the cinema booth plunges after him and can only be appeased after the mechanic has tried a trick.
Production notes
The film was shot in 70 mm film format. Due to its intended use in a motion simulator cinema, the movements of the Arri 765 camera had to take place during the shoot with the later programming of the six hydraulically controlled axes, onto which the entire cinema room was transferred with a force of over 6 tons let move three axes on all sides. The 70MM was developed in Paris and London, programming took place in Canada and Los Angeles. The fine-tuning takes place on site in the cinema. The shooting caused a stir in the press not only because of the celebrities involved (David Nowell came straight from shooting the US blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean, where he was responsible for the helicopter shots), but also because on the third day of shooting a piece of wall in one modern skyscraper was replaced with a backdrop and blown up as part of the chase. The demolition, which had been planned and prepared weeks in advance, took place shortly after the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and was therefore an occasion for speculation until a public press release was hastily sent out. The film's soundtrack, composed by composer Dan Licht, was recorded in Los Angeles and completed in the Wilshire Stages in Hollywood together with the sound design and the soundtrack.

Highway is shown exclusively in the Autostadt theme park near Wolfsburg in the specially designed ride simulator cinemas. Due to the movements of the auditorium in the cinema, which are an essential part of the dramaturgy, plot and viewer experience, it is not possible to see the film on DVD or Blu-ray. However, the production process was documented with a making-of video from the production company Condor Films .
