Hilario Zapata

Hilario Zapata (* 19th August 1958 in Panama City , Panama ) is a former Panamanian boxer in Halbfliegen- and flyweight .

Professional career

In 1977 he successfully started his professional career. On March 24, 1980, he boxed in the light flyweight against Shigeo Nakajima for the WBC World Championship and won by unanimous decision of the judges. He defended this belt a total of eight times and lost it to Amado Ursua on February 6, 1982 with a classic knockout in the 2nd round.

Zapata took this title back in his next fight when he defeated Tadashi Tomori on points. This time, however, he could only defend the title twice and lost it to Jung-Koo Chang the following year.

In the flyweight division, Zapata won the vacant WBA World Championship belt with a unanimous victory over Alonzo Gonzalez on October 5, 1985 and defended it five times in a row. In February 1987 he lost it to Fidel Bassa by unanimous decision.

In 1993 he ended his career.
