Hilmar Brinkmann

Hilmar Brinkmann (born November 16, 1939 in Rieder (Ballenstedt) , † May 28, 1965 near Schnackenburg ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

Hilmar Brinkmann grew up as the son of a mechanic and a seamstress in Rieder. After finishing school, he completed an apprenticeship as a precision mechanic at VEB Messgeräte Quedlinburg. He belonged to the FDJ , but was mainly involved in volunteering in the German Red Cross . From 1961 to 1964 Brinkmann completed a diploma course in the field of industrial, measurement, control and regulation technology at the engineering school for precision engineering in Jena . He then worked at VEB Chemische Werke Buna in Schkopau .

After visiting his sister in Magdeburg at the end of May 1965, he attempted to escape across the Elbe . On June 8, 1965, his body was discovered by the West German water police near Schnackenburg. According to the autopsy findings , he died from drowning or heart failure; external influences could be ruled out. Brinkmann's body was cremated and the urn was transferred to his family in the GDR for burial.
