Klaus Schroeder (* 16th October 1949 in Lübeck - Travemünde ) is a German political scientist and historian , who at the Free University of Berlin the research association SED state directs and workplace policies and Technology and a professor at the Otto Suhr Institute teaches.

Life

After graduating from the Katharineum in Lübeck , Schroeder studied biology , economics and political science at the Free University of Berlin from 1969 to 1975 . He finished his studies with a diploma in political science. He then received a doctoral scholarship . From the winter semester 1975/76 he held teaching assignments at the Free University of Berlin. From 1978 to 1982 he worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Sociology at the Free University of Berlin, focusing on the state, organization and planning. His theoretically guided empirical study “The road to stagnation. An empirical study on economic development and economic policy in the Federal Republic from 1967 to 1982 ” was accepted as a dissertation at the Free University of Berlin in 1982 and published in 1984 by Westdeutscher Verlag . In 1994 Schroeder completed his habilitation in the Department of Political Science. His courses deal with contemporary historical topics, but also with the welfare state, extremist movements, processes of social modernization , social movements and generally with the political and social system of Germany and the GDR .

From 1982 to 1987 Schroeder worked in the presidential office of the FU as a consultant for the first vice-president Johann Wilhelm Gerlach and then for the vice-president Bütow. He was responsible for the presidential supervision of the social sciences at the FU. In 1987 he switched to the political science department and became the managing project manager at the Politics and Technology department, which he took over as head in 1995.

In 1992, together with Manfred Wilke , Manfred Görtemaker , Bernd Rabehl and Siegward Lönnendonker , Schroeder founded the research association SED-Staat , which has since dealt with the history of German division and the reunification process , largely financed by third parties . Since then, he has been in charge of the research network, which was entrusted to him by the President of the Freie Universität Berlin.

As part of his work at the Politics and Technology department and the SED State research association, Schroeder solicited a large number of research projects. As an expert nominated by the CDU, he was a member of the "Enquete Commission for the processing of the post-reunification period in Brandenburg " set up in 2010 . In June 2013 he announced his resignation from the commission. In addition, since 2012 he has been a member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Commissioner for Stasi Records .

Schroeder is a guest author of the Axis of the Good .

Research priorities

Schroeder's focus areas are:

  • History and structures of the GDR;
  • the history of German division 1945–1990;
  • German reunification and the transformation process since 1989/90;
  • Social modernization processes and their consequences.
  • Right and left extremism.

His research results have been the basis of many books, essays and articles. In 1998 he published a comprehensive account of the history and structures of the GDR ( "The SED State. Party, State and Society 1949–1990" , Carl Hanser Verlag , Munich 1998). Two years later, “The Unity Price. A balance sheet ” , a consideration of the different developments in East and West Germany before and after reunification. In his 2004 book “Right-wing extremism and youth violence in Germany. An East-West Comparison ” , he critically examined the previous right-wing extremism research and presented the results of an empirical study together with the project team. In December 2006 he published an extensive study entitled "The changed republic" on the German reunification process . Together with Monika Deutz-Schroeder, he published several case studies at the end of 2007 on the GDR image of schoolchildren in East and West Germany. Her book “Social Paradise or Stasi State? The GDR Image of Schoolchildren - An East-West Comparison ” was widely and controversially discussed in the political and academic public. They then published a selection of the approx. 5000 comments, letters to the editor, etc. to the results of the study in the volume "Oh, how beautiful is the GDR" . The results of the follow-up study appeared in 2012 under the title “Later victory of the dictatorships?”. With the transformation process, especially in East Germany, Schroeder again sat down in his book “Das neue Deutschland. Why not together what belongs together " apart. In the summer of 2013 a revised and expanded version of his book "The SED State" was published .

Schroeder published the series “Studies of the SED State Research Association” together with Manfred Wilke in the Akademie-Verlag until 2002 . In this series, in which the research association presented its results, 15 books have appeared. After a break of several years, the series has been continued by Verlag Peter Lang since 2010. The editors are Klaus Schroeder and Jochen Staadt. From 2004, Schroeder and Peter März published the book series “Berlin and Munich. Studies on politics and history " in the publisher Ernst birds out two appeared in the year to four new books. The series was discontinued in 2012.

Together with Peter Massing , Schroeder developed a master’s degree in Politics and Contemporary History, which began in January 2008 and has been carried out annually since then.

According to the magazine Cicero, Schroeder is one of the 500 most cited German intellectuals in the past ten years. In the 2013 list, he was in 254th place.
