Hilton McConnico

Joseph Hilton McConnico (born May 13, 1943 in Memphis , Tennessee , † January 29, 2018 in Paris ) was an American designer and artist who lived in Paris. Mostly active as a product designer, McConnico also worked as a successful interior designer, painter, decorator, production designer, costume designer, actor and screenwriter. He received the César in 1984 for his set designs in the film The Moon in the Gutter .

Life

The artist lived in Paris from 1965. He worked as a designer for fashion houses ( Ted Lapidus , Yves Saint-Laurent ) and a producer of everyday objects. For the companies Daum (crystal glass), Toulemonde Bochart (carpets) and Lampe Berger (lighting), he created objects that are included in the permanent exhibitions of various museums. He was the first American whose work was included in the collection of the Musée des Arts décoratifs in the Louvre . Other pieces can be found in museums in Oslo , New York and Lausanne .

McConnico began working with Daum in 1987. Some of the pieces he created there were given to George HW Bush by François Mitterrand as state gifts. McConnico worked for Lampe Berger since 1998 . He designed for the cabaret Crazy Horse in Paris and his decorative paintings for exhibitions also made him famous. In 1990 the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art showed a retrospective of 30 years of his work.

McConnico's recent projects have included the redesign of the Toupary restaurant on the fifth floor of the historic La Samaritaine department store on rue de Rivoli in Paris. In 2006, he designed the interior design of the flagship stores in Tokyo (architect: Renzo Piano ) and Seoul (architect: Réna Dumas ) for Hermès . In 2007 he designed the exhibition rooms for the presentations in Hong Kong and Shanghai . He also designed the Hermès Museum in Tokyo. In 2010, he designed the show jumping at the Paris Grand Palais, which Hermès organized for the first time in 53 years .

Movies

McConnico has worked as a production designer and artistic director on more than 20 films. He was nominated three times for the César in the “Best Production Design” category for his interior design work: in 1978 for the film Süßer Wahn and in 1982 for Diva . He received the César in 1984 for "The moon in the gutter".
