The nasal thrush ( Zoothera dauma ) is a species of bird in the genus of the earth thrush .
Mark
With a length of 26 to 28 centimeters, this thrush is about the size of the mistletoe . It is characterized by rich golden-brown plumage with black crescent-shaped feathers on the head, chest and back. The tail is brown, at the end whitish. In their deep, undulating flight, the black and white bands of the lower wings are noticeable, which also distinguishes them from young, spotty mistletoe thrushes.
Occurrence
It occurs as a breeding bird from the Urals over Siberia to Japan and in the south to India, Indonesia, New Guinea and Eastern and South Australia. Wandering specimens have been found across Europe.
Way of life
The Himalayan earth thrush lives hidden in closed forests with rich undergrowth. She looks for worms, snails and insects in the foliage on the ground. In order to scare off food animals, it spreads its wings and tail or rocks its whole body. During the migration the birds can appear in small groups.
voice
The singing is subject to strong geographical variations. Among other things, analyzes of sonograms led to the separation of two Australian subspecies as separate species, the Papuan thrush ( Zoothera heinei ) and the Tasmanian thrush ( Zoothera lunulata ).
The North Asian earth thrushes utter a melancholy, long, high-pitched whistle that can be repeated for hours. Characteristic is a fluting double call "jü-jvü", whereby the second part is deeper than the first. The song of the South Asian earth thrush, however, is more thrush-like.
Subspecies
There are three known subspecies:
- Zoothera dauma dauma ( Latham , 1790) occurs in the western Himalayas to south-central China, northern Indochina and northern Thailand .
- Zoothera dauma horsfieldi ( Bonaparte , 1857) is common in Sumatra , Java , Bali , Lombok and Sumbawa .
- Zoothera dauma iriomotensis Nishiumi & Morioka , 2009 occurs on Iriomote .
