Himing + follow-up building

The series of dry freighters , known as the Himing class , also known as the Himing or the Fossum type , was built by the Lindenau shipyard in Kiel from 1953 .

history

At the beginning of the 1950s, through the mediation of the sales director of Deutsche Werft, Hamburg, a business relationship was established between the Lindenau shipyard in Kiel on the one hand and the Salvesen & Odd company in Oslo and the shipbuilding engineer Nils P. Pran from Skibskonsulenten on the other. This connection resulted in the design for the single decker Fossum , built in 1953 for the shipping association Leopold Liovensjöld, Anders Jahre, Frederik Höyer and Knut A. Knutsen , which is the structural basis of the Himing series built from 1956 . After the type ship Himing , nine sister ships were built by 1958, with two structurally identical, but somewhat larger, follow-up buildings being added in 1959.

details

The ships of the series are designed as dry general cargo ships with a deckhouse far aft and two cargo holds . They were mainly used in the transport of piece goods, wood and bulk goods. The holds of the ships each had two hatches, which were closed with MacGregor hatch covers and separated with a handle . With the exception of the two exceptions Fossum and Fossheim , all ships were provided with an intermediate deck in the hold, which enabled them to be used as interchangeable ships . The ships had three "H" masts with a total of eight loading booms, each with a lifting capacity of 3/5 tons.

The drive of the Fossum consisted of a six-cylinder MAN four-stroke diesel engine with an output of 1200 hp. The remaining ships received MAN eight-cylinder engines with 1,600 or 1,680 hp. The engine worked via a gearbox on the fixed propeller and enabled a speed of around 11 to 13 knots, depending on the engine. Furthermore, three auxiliary diesels were available.
