The ancient Egyptian name for the sky festivals referred to the celebrations, the beginning of which was determined by the lunar or sothi calendar .
background
definition
As early as the Old Kingdom , the Egyptians made a distinction between main and secondary festivals with regard to the termination and used the idioms with regard to the heavenly festivals: The moon brings it or Heaven brings it . In Heliopolis , the sky festivals with other star cults were "proclaimed" by the high priest in his function as astronomer after appropriate observations. For this reason he was also nicknamed "the greatest of those who see".
The division of the temple service was carried out according to the records in the Illahunpapyri in Lower Egypt using the actual lunar months , while in Upper Egypt the Egyptian administrative calendar served as the basis for the division of the temple service as in the Old Kingdom .
