HipChat was software from the Australian software company Atlassian for chats and instant messaging for companies that could be used in the office and also on the move. The functions included, for example, securely encrypted group chats, video chats or screen transmissions. It was aimed at all companies, regardless of their industry. It belonged to the field of collaborative software (or groupware ).

history

HipChat was released in 2010 and developed by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute students Chris Rivers, Garret Heaton, and Pete Curle. In March 2012, Atlassian bought the software. Since then, Atlassian has continuously developed the software and added functions. In July 2018, Atlassian announced a partnership with Slack , while also announcing that it would be discontinuing HipChat.

Functionality

The software offered many functions for communication and collaboration in the company. Some of them were for example:

The software could be integrated with other Atlassian products such as Jira or Bitbucket , it could be synchronized with mobile devices and could be used on these as well as on your own servers within the firewall . Customers or external parties could get secure guest access

safety

The software offered some special features for corporate communication . For example, it was possible to run the software as a HipChat server on your own servers in the network behind the firewall. Furthermore, the end-to-end 256-bit SSL encryption or TLS encryption was a unique selling point (this is a security protocol that is used in online banking , for example ). HipChat was TRUSTe EU, US and Swiss Safe Harbor certified.

HipChat was compatible with common operating systems such as Windows , Mac , Linux and mobile devices with the Android or iOS operating systems . It was also possible to use HipChat as a web-based application in a browser.
