Jira [ ˈdʒi.rɑː ] is a web application for error management , troubleshooting and operational project management developed by Atlassian . Jira is also used in non-technical areas for task management , but primarily in software development. There it supports requirements management , status tracking and later the error correction process. Jira can be used for process management and process improvement thanks to its functions for process organization (“ workflow management ”) .

history

The name comes from the original Japanese name for Godzilla , "Gojira". The developers of Jira wanted a reference to Bugzilla and so they came up with Gojira. It is pronounced according to the Japanese reading , dʒiɹa .

functionality

Jira is based on a Java servlet platform and runs on various common databases and operating systems .

Jira will by the user substantially by tickets (operations English issues filled). These can be viewed in a variety of ways, the functions include customizable dashboards, your own search filters, statistics, RSS - web feed and e-mail . A ticket consists of a project allocation, a summary ( English summary ), a type, a priority , a component assignment (or more) and a content. A lot of additional information can be added to a ticket either via additional fields (you can also define your own fields), attachments or comments. The tickets can simply be edited or the status change, e.g. B. from Open to Closed . Which status transitions are possible is defined using the customizable workflow . Every change to a ticket is recorded.

Jira offers a large number of configuration options: a separate ticket type with its own workflow, own status , one or more different status-dependent views ( English screens ), own fields (English custom fields ) and any manual or automatic workflow transitions can be developed for each application . In addition, so-called "Schemes" can be used to individually define access, the behavior of fields, the visibility of tickets and much more for each Jira project.

This architecture, which has to be extensively adapted, can be used to map many areas of the company and use Jira for many purposes (e.g. errors, tasks, requirements, risks, meetings, travel bookings, hiring new employees).

Jira's flexible architecture enables users to develop extensions for Jira and make them available to the community through the Atlassian Marketplace .

From version 7 of October 6, 2015, there is no longer one Jira application as before, but three so-called "applications": JIRA Software , JIRA Core and JIRA Service Desk . In the new version of JIRA Software , the previous versions JIRA and JIRA Agile (formerly Greenhopper) are combined and some new functions have been added.

Customers and Licenses

The manufacturer's customer list shows many large and globally active companies, including SAP , IBM , Microsoft , Nokia , Navteq , Thales , Electronic Arts , BMW , Audi , VW , IAV , but also organizations and institutions such as the European Parliament , CERN or the BBC and some universities such as Harvard University or Stanford University . In Germany, for example, the German Federal Police , the Deutsche Post , the German Weather Service and the German National Library use the software. Jira is used by approximately 14,500 customers in 122 countries worldwide.

Although Jira is a commercial product, it has free licenses for open source projects, nonprofits, charities, and individuals. For example, Jira is used to develop the application server JBoss (now WildFly ) and the Spring and Hibernate frameworks, as well as in numerous Apache projects. The developers of ReactOS also use Jira.

The licenses are also distributed by partners who often offer additional services such as installation, maintenance and hosting.
