Hippo und der Süßwasserkarl is a 26-part series (in two seasons) by the Augsburger Puppenkiste for the German sandman from 1981 and 1982 .

On the Swiss river Aare there are many other boats, such as the Ella, which belongs to the captain Karl, who is known by everyone as “Freshwater Karl”. Hippo is a hippo and Karl's best friend. Together they experience the most beautiful adventures on their ship, for example they meet a diver or ducks who do not behave like ducks.

The 26-part series was filmed on the Aare in Switzerland in 1981 and 1982 . It was the last series of the Augsburger Puppenkiste for the Sandman and was commissioned by Norddeutscher Rundfunk. The broadcast took place in two seasons and was broadcast on ARD in September 1982 and December 1983 .
