Hippolito Chizzola CRL (* 1522 in Brescia , † 1565 in Padua ) "Canonico regulare lateranense" was the son of Cav. Dr. Joannes from a respected Brescian family. He went to the San Salvatore monastery at the age of 12 and was ordained a priest at the age of 17. He was an important preacher and spoke out against the heresies of his time. In 1565 he was appointed Bishop of Termoli , but died in Padua that same year.

Life's work

At first he was very influenced by the religious reformation , was one of its advocates and then had to justify himself in Rome before the Holy Roman Office , where he was named in a case among those who think differently, and also defend himself before the Inquisition until he finally admitted his mistakes in 1551. His life, work and the process of the Inquisition are extensively edited in the books of Giorgio Caravale. He was a very well-known and critical preacher in his time, preached according to a contemporary biography in many cities such as Cremona, Pavia, Venice, Genoa and Mantua, where he was very close to the Gonzagas . For the Bishop of Brescia he was an advisor at the Council of Trent . In 1561 he was commissioned by Pope Pius IV to write a memorandum on church reform and to buy books on controversial theology. The plan was to have theologians debate the doctrines of controversy, and especially the authority of the papacy. Don Hippolito urged the authoritative Inquisition Cardinal Michele Ghislieri that the arguments of the Protestants had to be presented according to the original writings (in fonte) and not from books by the Catholic controversial theologians - an excellent proposal, but nothing is known about the implementation. He came out against heretics in particular, including in the Council of 1561 with a report against Pier Paolo Vergerio , but in some points he may have always sympathized with the Reformation. What was new was that he wrote his reports in Italian and not in Latin. He wrote several books and writings, e.g. B. in defense of the resolutions of the Tridentine Council and dedicated these writings to St. Charles Borromeo . In 1565 he was appointed Bishop of Termoli and was commissioned by the Pope to travel to Bohemia to preach against the heresies. However, he died shortly before in Padua in S. Giovanni di Verdara, where he is also buried. There is a bronze medal with his portrait, which is a rare honor. An oil painting, painted in 1556 by Sofonisba Anguissola (1535–1625) from Cremona , hangs in the Pinacoteca Tosio-Martinengo in Brescia. A sign of lasting importance Ippolitos for the order is a fresco medallion painted by Ignatz Gottlieb Kröll after 1731 on the south wall of the library of the Augustinian canons in Vorau / Styria, north of the Alps.
