Hippolyte Boissel de Monville

Baron Hippolyte Boissel de Monville , also Hippolite Boisel de Monville (* December 12, 1794 , † February 2, 1863 ) was a French factory owner and plant collector. Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Monv. ".

His father, Baron Thomas Charles Gaston Boissel de Monville (1763-1832), was peer of France , member of the Légion d'Honneur and from 1808 to 1831 mayor of Montville. From 1831 to 1847 his son Hippolyte inherited him as mayor. Father and son developed the agricultural region into an industrial one. In 1823 he married Louise Lannes de Montebello (1805-1889), daughter of Jean Lannes (1769-1809). Hippolyte Boissel de Monville owned an extensive collection of exotic plants in Montville , near Rouen . He was particularly concerned with cacti . In the first edition of the magazine L'Horticulteur universel (1839) published in Paris , eight first descriptions of new cactus species were published by him, which he had sent to Charles Lemaire .

His plant collection was sold at auction in 1846. Possibly this sale was a result of the severe storm that injured 170 people and killed 70 in Montville on August 19, 1845.

Dedication names

Nathaniel Lord Britton and Joseph Nelson Rose named the genus Monvillea Britton & Rose of the cactus family of plants (Cactaceae) in his honor . Even Jacques Étienne Gay dedicated to him with Semonvillea a genus.

Also the cactus species

are named after him.
