Hiroshi Minami ( Japanese 南 博 ; * May 1, 1959 ) is a Japanese diplomat. After various positions at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and as a diplomat, including at the United Nations , Minami was Japanese Ambassador to the Southeast Asian state of East Timor from 2017 to 2019 .

Career

Minami holds a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Tokyo and a master's degree in economics from the University of Cambridge , UK .

In April 1983, Minami began working for the Japanese Foreign Ministry. From October 1998 to August 1999 he was the private secretary for the deputy minister for foreign affairs at the embassies in London and Beijing . He then held the post of Deputy Director of the Coordination Department in the Foreign Minister's Secretariat until February 2001. Minami served as director for the G8 summit from March to August 2001. the G8 summit took place in Genoa at this time . After that he was director of the second department for Western Europe in the Office for European Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until July 2003. Then Minami moved to the Department of Multilateral Cooperation as Director of the Administration Department of the United Nations. From August 2004 to December 2005 he was director of the Political Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the same name, and from December 2005 to January 2008 he was Minister responsible for human rights, humanitarian affairs and specialized agencies at the Permanent Mission of Japan in Geneva . From January 2008 to June 2010, Minami was head of the embassy office of the Japanese embassy in Russia and from June 2010 to January 2012 advisor to the cabinet secretary. This was followed by the post of Deputy Director General for Global Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs until January 2014. From August 2014 to 2017, Minami was Deputy Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations with the rank of Ambassador.

On October 18, 2017, Minami presented his accreditation as Japanese Ambassador to East Timor to President Francisco Guterres . Minami succeeded Eiji Yamamoto on the post in Dili . Minami's term ended in 2019.
