Hiroshi Shirai , ( Jap. 白井寛 , Shirai Hiroshi * 31 July 1937 in Nagasaki , Japan ) is one of the most important contemporary people in the area of Shotokan - Karate . As the founder of the Istituto Shotokan Italia , a non-profit corporation under the umbrella of FIKTA ( Federazione Italiana Karate Tradizionale , Italian Association for Traditional Karate), he is dedicated to promoting Shōtōkan karate in Europe and the world and now lives and teaches in Milan , Italy . Master Shirai gives seminars together with Master Carlo Fugazza and is the responsible FIKTA examiner for Dan exams. In addition, Master Shirai is considered the developer of Goshin-Do, a special exercise program for self-defense.

biography

Shirai was born on July 31, 1937 in Nagasaki. After finishing school, he began to study geography at Komazawa University in Tōkyō in 1955 and took up karate training under the guidance of leading heads of the JKA , Kase Taiji , Nakayama Masatoshi and Nishiyama Hidetaka .

After only two years he received his first dan in 1957. 1959 followed the graduation to the second Dan and he took first place in the university championships. In the following year, 1960, he began the training to obtain the teaching license of the JKA under his teachers Nakayama, Nishiyama, Kase and Sugiura Motokuni , which he received in 1961. In the same year he graduated to the 3rd Dan and finished second in the All Japan JKA Karate Championships . The following year he won this in both disciplines, Kumite and Kata , and thus became 'Grand Champion'. In 1963 he was recognized as a master ( Sensei ) and graduated in 1964 to the 5th Dan.

In 1965 he traveled with several other great masters to demonstrations around the world (Europe, South Africa and the United States). In Italy he contributed to the spread of a new enthusiasm for the martial arts and trained numerous masters who are now active all over the world. In November of the same year he settled in Milan, where he still lives and teaches today. The following year he founded the AIK ( Associazione Italiana Karate ).

In 1969 he received the 6th Dan and one year later founded the FE.SIKA ( Federazione Sportiva Italiana Karate ), which celebrated numerous successes in competitions at national, European and world level. In 1974 he graduated with the 7th Dan, founded the ISI ( Istituto Shotokan Italia ) in 1979 and received the 8th Dan in 1986.

In the following year, together with other masters, he founded FIKTA ( Federazione Italiana Karate Tradizionale & discipline affini ), whose technical direction he still holds today. In 1999 he received the 9th Dan, on December 10th 2011 the 10th Dan and thus became one of the highest graduated and most important living masters in the field of karate.
