The Hirtengraben is a good two kilometers long right and northwest tributary of the Weidigsgraben in the Upper Franconian district of Lichtenfels .

The Hirtengraben rises at an altitude of 297  m above sea level. NHN almost 700 m north of the Bad Staffelstein part of the municipality Nedensdorf in a meadow at the western foot of the Mahlberg ( 327  m ).

It flows south at the western foot of the Mahlberg through a green strip of the Hirleng corridor and then reaches the village of Nedensdorf.

The Hirtengraben runs briefly along the eastern edge of the village, still crosses under Obere Dorfstraße in a westerly direction and finally flows underground from the left into the Weidigsgraben at a height of 257  m .
