The shepherd's island can be seen in the far south of the Altmühlsee |
The Hirteninsel is an island near the south bank of the Altmühlsee in the Franconian Lake District , north of Unterwurmbach , a district of the Central Franconian town of Gunzenhausen .
It is one kilometer from the Wald lake center and 4.3 km from the Schlungenhof lake center, has a circumference of around 530 meters and is around 35 meters from the southern shore of the lake. With a length of 210 meters and a maximum width of 80 meters, it has an area of around 1.4 hectares.
The island was initially accessible from the circular route around the Altmühlsee via a wooden bridge. After this was dismantled due to dilapidation, it is now connected to the path by a connecting dam. Bicycles are not allowed. The main part of the island is covered with grass , trees are planted on the shore. It is built with a refuge and freely accessible.
The name of the island comes from the shepherds who sometimes watch here .
