Muhammad Hisham Kabbani ( Arabic محمد هشام قباني, DMG Muḥammad Hišām Qabbānī ; born 1945 in Beirut , Lebanon ) is an Islamic scholar and Sufi - Sheikh from the Naqshbandi - Haqqani - Sufi Order of Lebanese origin in the United States . His students include the former world boxing champion Muhammad Ali and the former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono .

biography

He studied chemistry at the American University of Beirut and obtained a degree in Islamic law in Damascus . At the request of Sheikh Nazım Kıbrısi , he moved to the United States in 1990.

He is the co-founder and chairman of the Islamic Supreme Council of America , chairman of the American Muslim Assistance , founder of Kamilat , an international Muslim women's organization, chairman of the As-Sunnah Foundation of America, and founder and president of Muslim Magazine . In 2009 he was listed on the list of 500 most influential Muslims by the Prince al-Walid-bin-Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding of Georgetown University and the Royal Islamic Strategic Studies Center of Jordan.

Controversy

In 1999, Kabbani came into conflict with various organizations such as the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), and the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA) after publishing a statement stating that 80 percent of the Over 3,000 mosques in the US have been taken over by extremist ideologues. In the April 2016 issue of its Dabiq magazine, IS called him a renegade ("Murtadd").
