Nazım Kıbrısi (bourgeois Mehmet Nâzım Adil ; born April 21, 1922 (26 Schabān 1340 ) in Larnaka , British overseas territories ; † May 7, 2014 in North Nicosia , Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ) was a Cypriot Turkish Sufi teacher of the Nakschibendi tradition, who lived and worked in Cyprus and London . Internationally he was also known under the name Sheikh Nazim . In Turkish his full name is Muhammed Nazim El-Haqqani .

Live and act

Sheikh Nazım began studying chemistry in Istanbul in 1940 after finishing school . He was interested in religious questions and got in touch with the Naqschbandi order. Here he learned the Arabic language and was instructed in Islamic law . He went in search of a spiritual leader, a sheikh , and found him in 1945 in Damascus in Abdullah ad-Dagistani , Grand Sheikh and the 39th sheikh in the chain ( Silsila ) of the Naqshbandī order.

It is reported that Sheikh Nazim received all the initiations of the Naqshbandi order in a short time . He then returned to Cyprus, where he started teaching. His call to make the call to prayer in Arabic, which was forbidden in both Turkey and Cyprus at the time, kept the local authorities busy.

In 1955 he married Amina Adil in Damascus , a student of his sheikh from Tatarstan . In the following years he stayed primarily in Syria and Lebanon. After the death of his master in the early 1970s, Sheikh Nazim became the 40th Grand Sheikh of the Naqschbandi order.

In 1974 he founded a center in London. In the course of his travels to countries in Europe, Asia and North America, other students joined him. Since 1980 he has lived mainly in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus , where the headquarters of his order are located in Lefke .

Sheikh Nazım died on May 7, 2014 at the age of 92. His son Sheikh Muhammad Mehmet Adil was appointed as his successor to the 41st Grand Sheikh of the Naqshbandi Order.
