The Historial franco-allemand du Hartmannswillerkopf is a museum near Hartmannswillerkopf in Alsace , in which the acts of war in the First World War in the Vosges and on the Hartmannswillerkopf are presented. It illuminates what is happening from a historical, educational, touristic perspective and as a memorial. He belongs to the ensemble of Nécropole nationale du Silberloch - Hartmannswillerkopf and the underground Nécropole nationale du Vieil-Armand (Hartmannswillerkopf) with the crypte-ossuaire (crypt with ossuary). Federal President Joachim Gauck and François Hollande laid the foundation stone for the Historial on August 3, 2014, the 100th anniversary of the German Empire's declaration of war on France. At that time, plaques were put up to commemorate the German victims, and for the first time the German flag was also raised. The culture of remembrance changed.

location

The Historial is northwest of Mulhouse and Cernay . It can be reached from Cernay via the D 431. It is located northwest of Wattwiller (and as the crow flies west of Hartmannswiller ) at the foot of the Hartmannswillerkopf.

Exhibition areas

In the welcome area, a film introduces the situation in the realm of Alsace-Lorraine at that time . In the second area, the front in the Vosges is explained on text panels in French and German. In the third area, the life and death of soldiers is conveyed. The third area also includes the tambour (architecture) , a closed cylindrical room in which the horrors of war can be experienced through film. The fourth area serves to commemorate the victims and the development of Franco-German friendship .

Others

As early as 1921, the summit, criss-crossed by trenches, was listed as a historical monument. In October 1932, President Albert Lebrun inaugurated a monumental memorial with a gilded 'Altar of the Fatherland'.
