The historical library of the grammar school at the Kaiserdom in Speyer , as part of the school library of the grammar school at the Kaiserdom, is the oldest existing library in Speyer .

history

After the disaster of 1689, when Speyer was destroyed in the Palatinate War of Succession , the city's libraries, the Latin school founded in 1540 and the Speyer cathedral chapter had to be rebuilt. These younger book holdings merged in the 19th century in the Lyzealbibliothek opened in 1820, the predecessor of the library of today's grammar school at the Kaiserdom . The old library, which has been under the supervision of the Palatinate State Library founded in 1921 since 1990 , is still in the school today. "The current library of the grammar school at the Kaiserdom in Speyer is therefore not just a school library, but the main place where the autochthonous book collections of this city are passed on, as far as they have been preserved here at all."

Stocks

The not very large book collection of the grammar school (541 units according to a catalog kept up to 1812) was merged in 1817 with the younger Speyer cathedral chapter library, insofar as it had not disappeared, and in 1818 with the younger Speyer city library. The city library intended as a district library had received books from the old Mainz university library in 1803 (around 200 volumes of this provenance can still be traced today).

In the 19th century, the Lyceum Library was depository library since 1840 the Bavarian Legal Deposit Act called for the release of two deposit copies to the Court and State Library in Munich and certain forwarding the second copy of which appeared in the Palatinate literature at the high school library . "The most important library in the Palatinate was the grammar school library in Speyer".

The stocks relocated in 1942 suffered losses that could not be precisely quantified after their repatriation. The old stock up to 1800 now comprises a good 3000 units, including 23 incunabula . In the handbook of the historical book inventory (status 1989) the historical inventory before 1900 was given with approx. 10,360 titles.
