history

The two monuments were never part of a city gate. The two-storey Hadewig Gate , which was demolished around 1700, stood at the current location of the historic gate pillars . Prince Christian Eberhard ordered the two statues on July 17, 1705 for 300 Reichstaler as a replacement for the wooden entrance portal of the princely pleasure garden in Julianenburg, which he had only commissioned in 1698 for 300 Dutch guilders . The Bremen sculptor and stonemason Johann Mehne then made pillars and statues. The delivery of the two statues was delayed several times. In 1708 (the year Christian Eberhard died) they were finally erected on a drawbridge that connected the palace district with the Julianenburger Park. When the park was divided up in 1765, the two statues were moved to Burgstrasse, where they were given a new location as the so-called Burgthor at the level of the Alte Wache . They stayed there until the mid-1960s before they were installed at the entrance to the modern Julianenparkanlage. With the opening of the Aurich pedestrian zone in November 1974, they were given their current location at its western entrance.
