Historic crane (Hanau)
The historic crane on the banks of the Main in Hanau dates from 1869 (building inscription).
The cast iron crane is a last relic of the second Main port of Hanau, immediately west of the Main Canal , the oldest Main port of Hanau from 1617. After it proved to be unusable in the long term due to siltation, a land directly on the Main bank was used as a Port used.
The loading crane served this second port facility on the banks of the Main. Its mechanism is not disguised, only protected by a mushroom-shaped, tapering weather canopy. The mechanics are still functional today via a hand crank. The crane stands on a sandstone base and was given its current location in 1893. With the opening of the Hanau Main Harbor , the land was given up and the crane lost its function. Today it is protected as a cultural and industrial monument under the Hessian Monument Protection Act.
