History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice) is a live album by the band Grateful Dead .

history

The album consists of songs that were recorded on February 13-14, 1970 at the Fillmore East in New York City . The album Dick's Picks Volume 4 , which was released in 1996, is also a compilation of this concert. So the recordings were made at a similar time as the album Workingman's Dead .

History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice) is dedicated to band member Ron McKernan , who died of gastric bleeding in March 1973 while the album was being prepared.

The album was named after Owsley Stanley (also The Bear or Owsley Bear ), who was the band's sound engineer for many years and who appeared as producer on this album , so that the album is often only briefly referred to as Bear's Choice .

This album was originally planned to be the first in a series, but Volume Two never came about because this album was the last for Warner Bros. Records .

The album consists partly of acoustic, partly of electrical recordings and some songs can be assigned to psychedelic rock , which the band played less often on later albums, while the acoustic songs were already folk , folk rock and blues rock . With one exception ( Black Peter ), cover versions of other artists were recorded.

In 2001, a revised version of the seven songs and four additional songs by Rhino Records for the box set The Golden Road (1965-1973) was released , which was then released as a single CD in 2003.

The 2003 CD also contains an essay by Owsley Stanley.

successes

The album reached number 60 on the Billboard charts .
