Hjarnø is approximately 3.21 square kilometers large island in Horsens Fjord in Denmark . Hjarnø has 113 resident residents (January 1, 2020), most of whom are farmers. Hjarnø forms its own parish municipality ( Danish : Sogn ) Hjarnø Sogn , which belonged to Harde Bjerre Herred in Vejle Amt until 1970 . From 1970 it belonged to the Juelsminde municipality in the extended Vejle office and since the municipal reform on January 1st 2007 it belongs to the Hedensted municipality in the Midtjylland region . Hjarnø is part of the Association of Danish Small Islands . The island can be reached via a ferry from Snaptun . The journey time is approx. Seven minutes.

The island is named after the skald Hiarne , who, according to legend, was briefly King of Denmark in the 4th century, because he wrote the best grave poem about the late King Frode.

Ship settlement

During an excavation in 1935, the remains of 10 ship settlements ( Danish skibssætning ), which are between four and 13 m long and dating from the Iron Age , were found on the island . In the 17th century, Ole Worm had sketched over 20 ships and stone circles .
