The rear and front Stubensee are located in the rearmost part of the Pflerscher valley , a side valley of the Wipptal . The front Stubensee is at an altitude of 2399  m , the rear at an altitude of 2649  m . Similar to the Grünsee , access is from the Ochsenalm and then via hiking trail no.6 four kilometers north to the lake. The Magdeburg Hut (Italian: Rifugio Città di Cremona alla Stua ), a CAI refuge, is located on the front lake .

Both lakes shine with excellent water quality (level I). As is typical with mountain lakes, the water stays cool even on hot summer days at max. 12 ° C. While the rear lake is supplied with fresh water exclusively by rain and snowmelt, the front lake is fed and drained by the Hochalmbach (quality class I / rapid). The stream has a length of about 1.65 kilometers and is one of the source rivers of the Fernerbach . It flows together with this at the Ochsenalm. Both lakes also provide protected, untouched habitats for fish such as trout and carp .
