Steinheim High Court
The Steinheim High Court is a place of execution near Hanau-Steinheim , a district of Hanau .
location
The execution site is in the northwest area of the district Gross-Steinheim, today in a wooded area, and is publicly available. An elevation on which the place of execution probably originally stood can hardly be seen today. Today a forest path leads between the two supporting stone pillars, a completely unhistorical situation.
design type
What has been preserved is a double-sleeper gallows , of which the two supporting pillars , built from the rubble of bubble basalt, have been preserved up to a height of 5 meters. The wooden beam or iron rod originally lying above no longer exists. The facility is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .
history
The Steinheim High Court was the place of execution for the Steinheim Office . It was built under the von Eppstein family and continued to be used after the office was sold to Kurmainz in 1425. The oldest surviving pictorial representation comes from a general view of the Steinheim district in 1579. Since then, there seem to have been no structural changes. The last execution took place here in the 18th century.
